Tool Gate · How it works
How the AI Over-Reliance & Critical-Thinking Check gate works
How the AI Over-Reliance & Critical-Thinking Check scores six habits of independent AI use: a fake-number gate caps the verdict at ASSISTED when a fabricated figure sails through unchecked — so a would-be INDEPENDENT operator who missed the fake is only ASSISTED.
How the gate works
This tool grades how reliably you catch planted errors in AI output before you act on them. Each control is marked from your own evidence and weighted into a 0–100 score — and then the score is run past a gate that can only make the verdict worse.
The 6 weighted controls
| Signal | Weight |
|---|---|
| Caught the fabricated statistic (confident fake number) | 30 |
| Caught the plausible-but-false factual claim | 18 |
| Caught the plausible-but-false causal claim | 17 |
| Caught the biased / one-sided framing | 13 |
| Caught the loaded-language framing | 12 |
| Caught the outdated-as-current claim | 10 |
| Total | 100 |
The verdict bands
Catching the confident fabricated statistic is the load-bearing skill. Miss it and a would-be INDEPENDENT verdict is capped at ASSISTED regardless of the score — the cap can only lower, never raise. Being sure while wrong on a planted number is the over-reliance habit the check exists to surface.
In the worked sample it scores 70 out of 100 and still reads ASSISTED — Five of six planted errors were caught — the catch-rate is 70, which alone would read INDEPENDENT. But the one missed error was the fabricated statistic, marked with high confidence: the confident fake number. The fake-number gate caps the verdict at ASSISTED regardless of the 70, because catching that specific error is the load-bearing skill. The one thing to fix first: Catch the fabricated statistic — the confident fake number you missed. Verify any planted or surprising figure against a source before acting; that single habit is what separates ASSISTED from INDEPENDENT..
Common questions
Can something score well on the How the AI Over-Reliance & Critical-Thinking Check gate works and still fail?
Yes. The weighted score is run past a worsen-only gate — the Fake-number — that can only make the verdict worse. In the worked sample it scores 70 out of 100 and still reads ASSISTED, because five of six planted errors were caught — the catch-rate is 70, which alone would read INDEPENDENT. What is a worsen-only gate?
A dispositive rule that can only lower a verdict, never raise it. One fatal flaw overrides an otherwise-good score, because a single disqualifying gap shouldn't hide behind a high average. The tool also names the one thing to fix first — here, "Catch the fabricated statistic — the confident fake number you missed. Verify any planted or surprising figure against a source before acting; that single habit is what separates ASSISTED from INDEPENDENT.".
