Tool Gate · How it works

How the Content Refresh gate works

How the Content Refresh gate grades an old page: six signals weighted into a 0–100 refresh score, with a publish-blocker gate where an accuracy or safety problem forces REWRITE OR RETIRE regardless of the score — which is how a page scoring 80 still can't be refreshed, because it's built on stale, wrong claims you can't refresh into accuracy.

How the gate works

This tool grades an old page to decide whether it's worth refreshing. Each control is marked from your own evidence and weighted into a 0–100 score — and then the score is run past a gate that can only make the verdict worse.

REWRITE OR RETIRE

Publish-blocker · worsen-only

A publish-blocker at 0 or 1 — no business value, no fix feasibility, or an accuracy/safety problem — forces REWRITE OR RETIRE regardless of the refresh score. A high-traffic page you can't make accurate or safe isn't a refresh candidate; it's a liability.

In the worked sample it scores 80 out of 100 and still reads REWRITE OR RETIRETraffic decay, search opportunity, and update value are all maxed — the refresh score is 80, which reads REFRESH NOW. But accuracy & safety is at 0 (a publish-blocker): the page is built on stale, wrong claims. The gate forces REWRITE OR RETIRE — you can't refresh outdated statistics into accuracy, you rebuild or retire. The one thing to fix first: Accuracy & safety is at 0 — the page has stale or unsafe claims a refresh can't salvage. Rewrite it from scratch or retire it; don't re-publish outdated statistics as current..

Common questions

Can something score well on the How the Content Refresh gate works and still fail?

Yes. The weighted score is run past a worsen-only gate — the Publish-blocker — that can only make the verdict worse. In the worked sample it scores 80 out of 100 and still reads REWRITE OR RETIRE, because traffic decay, search opportunity, and update value are all maxed — the refresh score is 80, which reads REFRESH NOW. But accuracy & safety is at 0 (a publish-blocker): the page is built on stale, wrong claims. The gate forces REWRITE OR RETIRE — you can't refresh outdated statistics into accuracy, you rebuild or retire.

What is a worsen-only gate?

A dispositive rule that can only lower a verdict, never raise it. One fatal flaw overrides an otherwise-good score, because a single disqualifying gap shouldn't hide behind a high average. The tool also names the one thing to fix first — here, "Accuracy & safety is at 0 — the page has stale or unsafe claims a refresh can't salvage. Rewrite it from scratch or retire it; don't re-publish outdated statistics as current.".
