How the AI Bot & Scraper Traffic Control Readiness Gate gate works

How the AI Bot & Scraper Traffic Control Readiness Gate scores six defenses against AI scrapers: an enforceability gate forces EXPOSED when your controls can't actually be enforced, so a 65/100 setup that looks covered is still open.

How the gate works

This tool grades one web property's control over AI bots and scrapers before you trust that your stated rules actually hold. Each control is marked from your own evidence and weighted into a 0–100 score — and then the score is run past a gate that can only make the verdict worse.

The 6 weighted controls

SignalWeight
A deliberate stance per bot class16
robots.txt / llms.txt express that stance14
Enforcement layer (WAF / rate-limit / bot mgmt)22
Verify good bots by IP / reverse-DNS, not UA string18
Bot traffic logged and watched16
High-value endpoints protected from scraping14
Total100

The verdict bands

READY
score 75 and up
GAPS
score 50 to 74
EXPOSED
score below 50
Enforceability · worsen-only

Two controls decide whether anything is enforceable: an enforcement layer and a way to verify real bots by IP, not by a spoofable user-agent string. Leave both below Ready and the property is EXPOSED regardless of the score — you can declare a stance you cannot make stick. Bring either control to Ready and the gate releases.

In the worked sample it scores 65 out of 100 and still reads EXPOSEDStance and directives are fully set and everything else is partway there — the readiness score is 65, which reads GAPS. But enforcement and bot-verification are both only partial: you can publish rules, but you can't enforce them on bots that ignore them and can't tell a real crawler from a spoofed one. The enforceability gate forces EXPOSED regardless of the 65. The one thing to fix first: Stand up an enforcement layer (WAF / rate-limit / bot management) — it's the highest-weight gate control, and until it's Ready your stance is unenforceable..

Common questions

Can something score well on the How the AI Bot & Scraper Traffic Control Readiness gate works and still fail?

Yes. The weighted score is run past a worsen-only gate — the Enforceability — that can only make the verdict worse. In the worked sample it scores 65 out of 100 and still reads EXPOSED, because stance and directives are fully set and everything else is partway there — the readiness score is 65, which reads GAPS. But enforcement and bot-verification are both only partial: you can publish rules, but you can't enforce them on bots that ignore them and can't tell a real crawler from a spoofed one. The enforceability gate forces EXPOSED regardless of the 65.

What is a worsen-only gate?

A dispositive rule that can only lower a verdict, never raise it. One fatal flaw overrides an otherwise-good score, because a single disqualifying gap shouldn't hide behind a high average. The tool also names the one thing to fix first — here, "Stand up an enforcement layer (WAF / rate-limit / bot management) — it's the highest-weight gate control, and until it's Ready your stance is unenforceable.".

Grades your control posture, never people. Not a bot detector or a WAF, and no tool guarantees a crawler obeys you. Not legal advice.
